Since steel is made of a sturdy alloy, it is used in various facets of the building industry. It is often one of the preferred materials used for commercial construction but is also sometimes used in residential buildings. A great deal of the steel that is used today is from recycled materials, making it far more cost-effective than some of the other materials used in building construction. It is known to be one of the most recycled materials used today, which makes it a green building favorite amongst many builders. There are typically three different types of steel roofing materials that we use most often at Excellent Steel Buildings, Galvanized steel, Weathering steel, and Galvalume steel. Even though there is a lot of energy used in producing steel, it is certainly well worth the effort in the end.
Galvanized steel is one of the most popular types used in roofing construction. It is made from Zinc. The Zinc protects the inside of steel from corroding. It helps protect the steel panel and also extends the life of the product. This is one of the materials that are requested most often by customers who need a roof on their commercial properties.
Weathering steel was initially created to assist in the construction of heavy steel bridges. The outer layer of steel will rust but the inner layer of steel will not. It was designed for the outer layer to rust in order to protect the steel inside. It is similar to the patina process used for aluminum; however, it takes longer than it does the aluminum process. Since it is created to rust on the outer layer, it wouldn’t be a good option to use for steel roofing. Rather, it is a good option for an accent roof. Anyone who wishes to use weathering steel for their roofing should always keep in mind the rusting process so that they use it in a way that is most appropriate and that will offer lasting benefits.
This type of steel is similar to galvanized steel except it doesn’t use a zinc coating like galvanized steel; instead, it uses aluminum and zinc. Aluminum will protect the steel from corrosion due to the environment and offers a better looking than the galvanized steel. The zinc found in galvalume steel is what gives the steel its durability. Galvalume can be painted but a very specific type of paint is required if you wish to obtain the best effect. The area must be free of any soil, oil contaminants or grease before applying any type of paint. Galvalume steel roofing has been in use for 40 plus years due to its durability and long-lasting benefits.
